Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Treatment in The Netherlands

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is a form of peripheral facial palsy caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the shingles virus) in the facial nerve near the ear. Due to the high potential for substantial nerve injury, the recovery process is often long and may result in persistent complications. Treatment in The Netherlands, as elsewhere, follows two distinct phases:

Phase I: Acute Medical Management (Hospital/GP)

The immediate, critical phase of RHS treatment focuses on combating the viral infection and reducing nerve inflammation. This phase should ideally begin within three days of symptom onset for the best chance of a full recovery.

The acute management typically involves combination therapy:

  • Antiviral Medications: Drugs such as acyclovir or valacyclovir are prescribed to fight the varicella-zoster virus.

  • Corticosteroids: Medications like prednisone are administered in high doses to reduce the severe inflammation of the facial nerve, thereby boosting the effect of the antiviral treatment.

  • Symptomatic Relief: Pain relievers are used for the often-intense pain (otalgia and headaches), and anti-vertigo medications may be provided for dizziness.

  • Ocular Protection: Due to the inability to close the eye, artificial tears and eye lubricants are essential to prevent corneal damage.

In the Netherlands, specialized hospitals like the UMC Utrecht have contributed research supporting the combination therapy approach for optimal outcomes in RHS patients.

Phase II: Specialized Rehabilitation for Long-Term Complications

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, in the majority of cases, results in more extensive damage to the facial nerve compared to Bell’s Palsy, often leading to a challenging and lengthy recovery. Even after the active infection is treated, many patients are left with chronic complications, most notably Synkinesis (involuntary facial movements), persistent asymmetry, and muscle tightness or pain.

This is where specialized rehabilitation becomes crucial.

Crystal Touch Clinic: Specializing in RHS Residuals

The Crystal Touch Bell’s Palsy Clinic in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, is the only clinic specializing exclusively in non-invasive rehabilitation for long-standing facial palsy, including Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. The clinic focuses specifically on patients in the late recovery stages (typically from 8 months and older) who are struggling with residuals.

The clinic’s approach is centered on their unique, research-backed methodology: Neuro-Proprioceptive Rehabilitation (NPR).

The NPR Method Aims to:

  • Reduce the manifestations of Synkinesis (e.g., the eye closing when smiling).

  • Restore better Facial Symmetry and balance.

  • Alleviate chronic facial pain and muscle tension.

  • Help the brain “recall” more normal, symmetrical facial expressions through focused attention and manual techniques.

Accessible Treatment Programs

Crystal Touch offers a range of programs for RHS patients:

  • In-Clinic Programs: In-depth diagnostics (including Nerve Conduction Study) and intensive working sessions are available at their Rotterdam location.

  • Online Programs: Full rehabilitation programs are available remotely for international and long-distance patients.

  • Hybrid Programs: A combination of limited in-clinic visits and ongoing online sessions for maximum flexibility.

  • Consultation: Expert video consultations are available to assess the condition and establish a personalized recovery prognosis.

By providing highly specialized, objective, and individualized rehabilitation, the Crystal Touch Clinic in the Netherlands offers a dedicated path for RHS patients to overcome long-term complications and work towards their goal of regaining a natural, effortless smile.
