Expert guidance with advanced diagnostics for Facial Paralysis Recovery
Our in-clinic consultation and diagnostic session is applicable for all patients with Bell’s palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, and other types of peripheral facial palsies who are suffering from slow recovery, synkinesis and other complications.
During the session, we analyze your condition in detail, assess your recovery to date, answer your questions and provide comprehensive explanations on your facial paralysis.
In addition to a personalized assessment of your condition, this session includes quantitative tests using electroneuromyography (Nerve Conduction Study). These tests help us accurately measure nerve recovery and muscle function, giving you a clear picture of your current status and potential recovery path.
What to expect from an in-clinic diagnostic session
- Personalized Assessment:
In-depth analysis of your condition and symptom progression. We will answer your questions and advise you on what you can do to combat your most prominent complaints. - Detailed Condition Explanation:

To objectively determine the extent to which your facial nerve has currently recovered. - Synkinetic Correlation Test:
To measure the differences between the movement patterns on the affected and healthy sides of your face.
About the quantitative testing in the clinic
For facial paralysis recovery, objective measurements of nerve and muscle function are essential. Our clinic uses electroneuromyography equiment to perform two key assessments.
Nerve Conduction Study
This test measures the electrical conductivity of your facial nerves in order to evaluate the recovery level and determine areas of potential improvements.
Synkinetic Correlation Test
This assessment identifies involuntary muscle co-activation (synkinesis), enabling us to tailor management techniques that help reduce unwanted movements and improve overall facial control.
You can find more details about these two test in our article “What we can measure, we can manage”.

In-clinic vs. online consultation
If you can comfortably travel to our clinic in Rotterdam and return home within one day, then we advise you to plan the in-clinic diagnostic session.
If you need more than one day to travel to Rotterdam and back, then we recommend doing an Online Video Consultation first.
This will save you a significant amount of time and financial resources and still answer most of your questions. Based on the results of an online consultation, you can later visit the clinic for quantitative tests as a part of your full rehabilitation program.
FAQs about in-clinic diagnostics
Who is the in-clinic diagnostics for?
The in-clinic diagnostic session will be useful to facial palsy patients who live within 1-day travel to the clinic and back home.
To those who live further away, an online consultation might be a better option.
To benefit maximally from the in-clinic diagnostic session, you need no less than 8 months to have passed since the onset of facial paralysis. At this stage, your natural recovery reaches its saturation point, and we can see with the in-clinic tests the true picture of your recovery level.
If less than 8 months have passed since the onset, it might be better for you to book an online diagnostic consultation, where you can ask your questions and receive a realistic recovery prognosis.
What will I need for the diagnostic session?
Prior to your visit, we willrequest some additional information about your facial palsy history – treatments taken, medications administered, surgical interventions, etc.
We will ask for any other required information before your visit.
During your visit, you will not need to bring anything with you.
Can I come for the in-clinic diagnostic even if I am not planning on following your rehabilitation programs?
Yes, absolutely. The goal of the diagnostic session is to provide you with a clear and objective picture of your current condition. We are happy to answer any of your questions based on these results, including which treatments will bring which results.
We believe in informed decision-making, and our goal is to help as many facial palsy patients as possible on their path to recovery, even if their choice is to find help elsewhere.
