About Alex

Alex co-founded Crystal Touch in 2008 together with Elena Pashova, the founder of the clinic’s Neuro-Proprioceptive Rehabilitation method. While Elena leads the treatment sessions, Alex leads the clinic’s diagnostics and research: he measures the condition of each patient’s facial nerve, explains what can still improve, and tracks progress during the rehabilitation program.

His main interest is what happens after the acute phase: why some people are left with synkinesis, tightness, pain and asymmetry, and how these complications can be reduced years later without surgery. He shares this knowledge through the Bell’s Palsy Knowledge Base, webinars, seminars and his book.

Extended Nerve Conduction Study

A standard nerve conduction study gives a general picture of the facial nerve. Alex developed an extended protocol that measures the condition of 6 branches and sub-branches of the facial nerve separately, at the acute, early recovery and long recovery stages. This shows which parts of the face have recovered and where nerve fibres are still missing. Read more about measuring facial nerve recovery.
Synkinetic Correlation Analysis

Synkinetic Correlation Test

Alex also developed an instrumental test that compares the movement patterns the brain produces for the affected side and for the healthy side. During voluntary facial expressions, it detects, shows and measures the unwanted electrical activity in the affected muscles that causes synkinesis. The clinic uses it to measure synkinesis objectively at the start of a program and to track how it changes. Alex published results from 75 patients measured with this method in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences in 2019.

online consultations since 2020

Online consultations

Since 2020, Alex has conducted more than 1,200 online diagnostic consultations with patients from around the world. Most of them are in the later stages of recovery, from 9 months to more than 30 years after their facial palsy. In a video consultation, he reviews the recovery history, assesses the current condition and explains what improvement is realistic.
