Facial palsy & Bell's palsy: causes, consequences and modern methods of recovery.
If you have not fully recovered from a long-standing Bell’s palsy or other type of peripheral facial palsy; if you suffer from synkinesis, facial pains, contractures of facial muscles, asymmetry of facial expressions, excessive lacrimation and if you want to improve your condition, then we invite you to join our 2-day Bell’s palsy Seminar & Workshop (21-22 March 2020).
This event will be useful and practical to attend not only for Singaporeans but also for those of you who live in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Philippines and Australia.
During the seminar part of the event we will explain the causes of various types of facial palsy (including Bell’s palsy). We will also explain why the recovery is not always complete and dicsuss possible residuals and complications. We will also give recommedations on what to do to recover and improve your facial condition sooner. You will learn in detail about the existing treatment methods and modern approaches to rehabilitation after facial palsy.
During the 2-day Bell’s palsy workshop, you will learn practical self-recovery techniques that you can use at home to make your situation better and to return balance to your facial muscles and facial expressions.
The event will be useful for patients suffering from residuals and complications of all types of peripheral facial palsy:
Bell’s palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, post-operational and post-traumatic facial palsy, Lyme disease, etc.
21-22 March 2020
Seminar: 21 March
Workshop: 21-22 March
Venue will be announced soon
Day 1 – 2.5 hours
During the seminar we will discuss anatomical, physiological and psychological aspects of facial palsy. We will discuss the possible causes of facial palsies, mechanisms of nerve damage and the process of recovery. We will pay special attention to the reasons why the recovery of facial movements after facial palsy is not always complete. Furthermore, we will elaborate on what should and what should not be done to facilitate the regeneration of facial nerve and to improve chances for maximal recovery. During the seminar we will take a close look at various methods and techniques that are presently being used in Bell’s palsy rehabilitation. Special attention will be paid to the possibility to recover from residuals and complications on the later stages (2 years and more). On concrete examples we will explain why a recovery is possible even after 10, 20 or 35 years since the onset. At the end of the seminar we will explain the basics of Crystal Touch rehabilitation method and answer your questions.
Day 1 – 3 hours, Day 2 – 5 hours
After having understood the theory of facial and Bell’s palsy, we will move on to the practical part – the workshop.
The main purpose of the workshop is to provide practical rehabiliational skills to facial palsy patients, who for various reasons cannot attend individual rehabilitation programs at our clinic in Rotterdam.
Crystal Touch rehabilitation programs are composed individually for every patient. The program depends on the history of your facial palsy and the present condition of your facial muscles and facial tissue. To approach each case individually, we will need some additional information in advance about your case. We will prepare for you a customized selection of special rehabilitation techniques that you can use at home after the workshop. We may need some pictures of the present condition of your face. After your registation we will contact you with a request for more details.
What you can expect from the workshop:
- receive a persoanlly-tailored to your current condition set of rehabilitation techniques
- learn how to use your hands for the recovery of your facial muscles
- learn how to properly relax your facial muscles in order to stimulate the recovery and to reduce the pain and contractures
- learn how to balance the healthy and affected side of your face
- learn what to do to overcome synkinesis and asymmetry of facial expressions
- understand how to improve your self-esteem and self-confidence in your particular situation
During the workshop you will learn the foundation principles of Crystal Touch rehabilitation, as well as the basic techniques that you can practice at home in order to change your situation for the better. Based on the additional information that we will receive from you after the registration, we will compose your individual homework that you will be expected to follow on a daily basis. Besides, you will receive a ‘Crystal Touch Passport‘ that will include illustrations of rehabilitation techniques that you will learn during the workshop. You should consult your ‘Crystal Touch Passport‘ while performing your daily rehabilitation sessions at home.
Please note: the workshop is not a replacement for a full-scale rehabilitation program. It is meant as an alternative for those who are restricted in their possibility to attend working sessions in our clinic. By following our recommendations from the workshop for extended period of time, with persistence and dedication, you can expect certain improvements of your condition.
Extra: Personal Diagnostic Session
For Extended Pass holders
This session involves Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) and Synkinetic Correlation test (SC).
Both of the measurement modalities will help us to assess the recovery level of your facial nerve and the current condition of your facial muscles. After having performed these two tests we can objectively evaluate and analyse your level of recovery and understand better how to approach your rehabilitation for the best possible result.
Nerve Conduction Study:
During the Nerve Conduction Study we will measure and analyse the capacity of your facial nerve to conduct the mimetic signals that are coming from your brain to your facial muscles. For this purpose we will use a special device (electroneuromyograph) that records the intensity of muscular responses to the external stimuli. The results of these measurements will allow us to conclude, to which extent various branches of your facial nerve have regained their connection to your facial muscles, and also to evaluate the quality of that re-connection.
Synkinetic Correlation test:
Using the different protocol of the same electroneuromyograph, we can measure the intensity of your synkinesis, and also have a clear picture of the eventual contractures or hyper/hypo-tone of your facial muscles. The analysis of Synkinetic Correlation test will help us to determine where to put the emphasis in your rehabilitation program, and which aspect of your facial condition should receive more of your attention during your independent work at home after the workshop.

Extra: NCS/SC Personal Diagnostic Session
During the event we also provide the opportunity for the Extended Pass holders to have a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) and Synkinetic Correlation (SC) test. These two measurement modalities will enable us to determine the recovery level of your facial nerve and also to measure your eventual synkinesis and contractures of facial muscles. Synkinetic Correlation test allows us to see how well your brain can manage your facial movements on the affected side.
We find it very important to attend to each participant inidividually and to allocate sufficient time to everyone. Therefore, the number of possibilities for the Extended pass that includes a diagnostic session is limited to 6 slots only.
