Recovery from Bell's Palsy complications

Our Intake-meeting takes 60-75 min, and is combined with the first treatment session. The intake consists of several parts:
- You tell us about the significant details of your recovery and share your concerns about complications of your long-standing Bell’s palsy (facial asymmetry, facial pain, synkinesis, contractures, excessive tearing etc.)
- We test the recovery grade and the functioning of your facial nerve using NCS (Nerve Conduction Study), and measure the mass-movement patterns of your facial muscles using our Synkinetic Correlation method (developed and researched at Crystal Touch clinic, presented at European Congress of NeuroRehabilitation in Vienna, 2015)
- Our specialist will assess the condition of your face, flexibility of your facial muscles and sensitivity of both sides of your face. We will map the painful spots and areas of your face for the future adjustment of your rehabilitation program
- We will assess your motivation and your general attitude towards your own regular and persistent efforts at home that will be necessary in addition to our working sessions in the clinic
- Together with you we will conclude whether you are prepared to invest your own daily efforts in order to improve the symmetry of your face, to reduce synkinesis, to eliminate facial pains and to stop excessive tearing. “Achieve your goals with Crystal Touch method”
Some improvements in your facial condition you can notice already after the first working session. Your face feels soft, relaxed and more balanced. Painful spots and muscle knobs soften and cause less discomfort. Excessive tearing may stop already after 2-3 sessions.
After several sessions and with your persistent work at home, your synkinesis will become less and less pronounced. Your main goal then will be to take these positive changes further and commit them into your (first conscious and then sub-conscious) memory. Practice them and eventually make them your irreversible mimetic habit.
Crystal Touch rehabilitation programs include two equally important components:
- Working sessions in the clinic (every 5-7 weeks)
- Your daily application at home of Crystal Touch special rehabilitation techniques. All of them you will gradually learn during your working sessions
1. Working sessions in the clinic
Each working session takes about 1.5 hours and consists of several modules:
- Checking your homework and fine-tuning your techniques if necessary
- Crystal Touch rehabilitation treatment. It stimulates the regeneration process in the facial nerve, balances the relaxation of mimetic muscles on both sides of the face, improves the blood circulation in the face, head and neck areas, relieves the over-tensed and painful spots in your face and brings to symmetry the mimetic signals from the brain to both affected and healthy sides of your face.
- Learning and practicing new rehabilitation techniques for independent work at home: ideomotoric exercises to train your brain, mental methods for training of your emotions so you can manage them and keep in balance, special manual techniques aimed at creating symmetrical proprioceptive signals from your face to your brain, and the visualisation techniques, which include “internal mirror” approach.
- Explanation of the homework. During each of your working sessions you will gradually learn a wide range of special Crystal Touch rehabilitation techniques that are necessary for achieving steady and lasting improvements. What you learn – becomes your homework till the next session. It is important that you get those techniques right, so at home you can practice them and take your progress further.
General rule: the more time you dedicate (quietly) to your face and to yourself – the more positive changes will come and the more lasting those changes will be.
One important advice: do not look countless times every day into the mirror, biting your nails and trying to see the changes. Your changes will be coming steadily, but in small steps. Usually the people around you will start noticing them after several weeks of your committed work. You will start feeling them first and seeing them later.
2. Daily work at home
You should practice your homework at least twice per day (10-15 min each time): once in the morning after waking up, and once in the evening before going to bed. If during the day you feel discomfort or tension in your face, it is a good idea to take 5-10 minutes to do the relaxation exercises.
You should observe carefully your changes in facial condition, changes in your sensation of facial muscles and in your emotional moods. Every 3 weeks you report your progress in your diary per e-mail to us.
